As temperatures begin to surge across Jharkhand, authorities at Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park have rolled out a comprehensive summer protection plan to safeguard animals from the intensifying heat.

With the India Meteorological Department issuing a heatwave warning for April 20 and 21, the zoo administration has taken early and targeted measures to ensure animal welfare remains uncompromised.

Heatwave Response: Cooling Systems and Shelter Upgrades

To counter rising temperatures, air coolers have been installed in enclosures housing carnivorous animals such as lions, tigers, and leopards—species known to be more sensitive to extreme heat.

In addition, the upper sections of enclosures have been layered with paddy straw. This traditional yet effective method helps reduce direct heat exposure and keeps the habitats relatively cooler during peak daytime temperatures.

According to zoo veterinarian Dr. O. P. Sahu, these steps are part of a proactive strategy to prevent heat stress among animals.

🥗 Diet Overhaul: Hydration Takes Priority

Recognizing the impact of heat on animal health, the zoo has also introduced significant dietary changes:

  • Herbivores are being fed water-rich fruits like watermelon and cucumber
  • Carnivores are receiving supplements, including multivitamins and glucose
  • Birds are being given fruits such as mango and watermelon, along with vitamin B-complex

This revised diet aims to maintain hydration levels, boost immunity, and prevent fatigue caused by excessive heat.

🐾 Inside the Zoo: Scale and Species

Spread across 104 hectares in Ormanjhi, the zoo is home to nearly 1,450 animals representing 83 species, including mammals, reptiles, and birds. Among them are seven tigers and three lions, which are currently under enhanced monitoring due to their vulnerability to heat.

📊 Temperature Trends and Alerts

Jharkhand is already experiencing rising mercury levels:

  • Daltonganj: 42.1°C (highest recorded)
  • Bokaro: 38.2°C
  • Ranchi: 37.1°C

Weather officials predict that temperatures could climb by an additional 2–3°C over the next three days, with dry conditions persisting.

The heatwave alert covers multiple districts, including Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, Simdega, Khunti, Saraikela-Kharswan, and East & West Singhbhum.

🔍 What This Means

The measures taken by Ranchi Zoo highlight a growing awareness around climate-sensitive animal care. As extreme weather events become more frequent, such adaptive strategies may soon become standard practice across zoos in India.
